My inspiration for this painting was driven by the death of my father. I struggled to grasp how someone with such presence, personality and history can be reduced to a pot of ashes. It brought home to me the reality that no matter what: birth, death and decay are the only certainties in life. In order for me to come to terms with this loss I needed to explore, and express this process through paint. In the same way that a complex body is composed of simple elements, a painting, no matter how complex, is composed of three primary colours: red, yellow and blue. The face in the painting is my own, and in expressing the process of birth, death and decay by showing the life-death cycle in the paint returning back to its former state, somehow helped me to understand, and in the process gave me great healing.
