Remains of the Dragon. Terry Davis For Remixtd Remixtd
Remains of the Dragon is a deeply symbolic work that successfully presents a snapshot of life – not a life from imagination or fantasy, but a real life, where dreams burn and hopes are singed, and yet, life continues.

This work builds a substrate of uneven and rocky existence, beautifully enrobed with pearls and shining metals, and charred with the vicissitudes of the struggles in life. And it boldly presents this life, framed and offered for exactly what it is: a life, strongly and beautifully remaining despite those struggles.

And note that even as that strong life remains, there are still embers glowing from the fire that periodically sweeps across daily existence. These hot embers glow an angry red, and they never completely disappear. In some parts of life, they threaten to overwhelm, in others they simply dot an otherwise shining and strong background.

Design notes

The challenge for this design was in resisting the constant urge to create uniformity. The process of design in many ways is one of bringing forth order out of disorder. But in the case of Remains of the Dragon, the hope was to represent life as it is: order and disorder coexisting, and in many ways, being one and the same.

The core substrate was deliberately shaped to be uneven and pock-marked. Even the very linear edges were worked to create uneven curving surfaces, all to reinforce a notion of a life that experienced all the events and emotions and challenges that real life has to offer.

Finding the right materials to represent the fabric of life was also a great challenge. There was a deep desire to avoid traditional symbols and textures, and instead take a highly-distilled viewpoint of life. The rock, dark crystal, and deeper tones were carefully arranged to be both background and main stage.

Representing the joys, happiness, and successes of life became an easy thing once the main stage was set: bright metals and glowing glass were set-off by the more primitive and darker backgrounds. And the embers of challenge filled in the remaining part of the design, and having been set last, perfectly aligned with their more prosaic counterparts.

The overall composition of Remains of the Dragon is one of fluidity. Achieving that fluidity in a highly-linear and structured design was a challenge, but a challenge that was ably met over the design process of this work.

Remains of the Dragon was conceptualized, designed, and executed in the Summer of 2014.

Multimedia work composed of semi-precious stones and new and salvaged materials including freshwater pearls, vintage beadwork, volcanic rock, reclaimed vintage wire from mid-century American lighting, glass, vintage acrylics, and a variety of other collected materials. Interior structural entity is a foam salvaged core, shaped and formed to design. Frame materials are wood, paper, and cardboard.

Dimensions: 21 inches (53.5 cm) tall, by 7.7 inches (19.5 cm) wide, by 1.6 inches (frame); 2.2 inches (deepest point) (4 cm at frame; 5.5 cm at deepest point) depth.
