Planting Rice. Miriam Besa 1945

This painting captures the traditional Filipino occupation of farm life in a community of men and women on a hot sunny day. No dark colors are used to produce a feeling of tranquility and peace. Instead I used yellows, orange, purples to reflect the true Filipino soul of endurance and hard work. Its visual weight is light. The treatment of the clouds merging with the horizon is the vastness and the continuous cycle of life in this village.

Happy farmers in their bright clothes and straw hats or conical hat (called “salakot”, made of rattan or reed) work together amid a green and sunlit landscape of plenty.

Preparing the field for planting typically involves plowing to till or dig-up, mix, and overturn the soil; next is harrowing to break the soil clods into smaller mass; then leveling the field to form paddies. Many paddies are flooded by rivers and rainfall during monsoon season, while others must be irrigated to hold an average of 4–6 inches of impermeable subsoil and are bordered by earthen bunds (we call “pilapil) to divide the field into several parcels. Rice stalks are bundled together and positioned randomly on the paddies. Rice is planted a foot apart and by harvest time it will be a field of golden yellow ricefield full of love and promise.

I experienced great joy and a sense of connection to my native country, because of its simplicity but beyond that is the underlying significance of our culture. For my viewers, simply appreciate a work of art that does not need science but to humanize us, and assess its value and importance.
